The Case for Doing the Thing Alone

Going alone is not a consolation prize for the plan you wanted. Sometimes it is simply the way the plan gets to happen now.

There are things I still want to share with someone. Dinner across a table. Trips. Sunday mornings. The ordinary intimacy of building a life together. Independence did not erase any of that.

What I am retiring is the idea that wanting partnership means I should leave blank spaces in my life until it arrives.

Go to the movie. Buy one ticket to the event. Sit at the bar. Take the trip. Walk into the bookstore and lose an hour. None of those experiences become less legitimate because there is an empty seat beside you.

The funny thing is that once I stopped treating solo plans like evidence that something was missing, they became much more enjoyable. The event is the event. The city is the city. The book is the book. My life is happening while I am in it.

Doing the thing alone is not a declaration that I never want company. It is a refusal to miss my own life while I wait for it.
