Actually free things to do around New York this month — culture, museums, festivals, parks and city experiences. Updated as new dates are confirmed.

Put these on the October calendar
Mid-Autumn Festival at Gotham Park · October 2–4
A free weekend festival with 100+ community-painted lanterns, art installations, live performances, cultural workshops and AAPI vendors. Food and shopping are optional; entry and programming are free.
FUN FEST JAPAN · October 4
A free Japanese cultural festival at Corlears Hook Park with folk dance, taiko, traditional performance, origami, calligraphy and a community Bon Odori finale.
Open House New York Weekend · October 16–18
One of the best city-exploration weekends of the year. Hundreds of spaces across New York open for tours and experiences; many are free, although popular locations can require advance reservations.
Trick-or-Streets · October
NYC DOT brings Halloween and harvest programming to Open Streets, plazas and other car-free spaces around the city. The 2026 event schedule is still being released, so this is one to watch as October gets closer.
Free museums & culture — anytime
The Museum at FIT
Fashion exhibitions without the admission charge. This is an especially good AURA day: fashion, design and enough nearby Chelsea to build an afternoon around it without turning the museum into the expensive part.
National Museum of the American Indian
The Smithsonian’s Lower Manhattan museum at 1 Bowling Green is free and includes Native and Indigenous art, histories and contemporary culture.
The Drawing Center
A free SoHo museum focused entirely on drawing, with rotating exhibitions that make it worth checking again instead of treating it as a one-time stop.
Federal Hall National Memorial
A free Financial District stop tied to early U.S. government history and George Washington’s first inauguration.
Free on specific days
Whitney Museum of American Art
Free admission Friday evenings and on the second Sunday of each month; advance planning is smart because the free windows can be popular.
The $0 New York day
Walk Central Park, stop at Strawberry Fields, wander a neighborhood you usually rush through, take your own skyline photos, pack coffee or lunch from home and make the city the activity. Free does not have to mean an organized event.
AURA’s rule for this list
FREE means the experience itself has no required admission price. If a reservation is required, I’ll say so. If food, shopping, transportation or an optional add-on costs money, I’ll say that too. If an event starts calling itself free while requiring a two-drink minimum, it is getting demoted to Free-ish. 😂
