NEW YORK · THE $0 DAY
The New York Day That Costs Almost Nothing
A museum, a long walk, a skyline and something you packed from home. New York can still give you a whole day without taking your whole paycheck.
There is a particular kind of New York spending that happens because you left the house. Coffee becomes lunch, lunch becomes a ticket, the ticket becomes a drink, and suddenly a casual Saturday has a three-digit receipt.
So I want AURA to keep another kind of itinerary too: the day where the city itself is the activity.
Start with something genuinely free, like the Museum at FIT or the National Museum of the American Indian. Walk instead of immediately jumping into a car. Pick a neighborhood and let yourself notice it. Bring coffee from home if the point of the day is spending nothing.
The important part is not turning a no-spend day into punishment. We are not standing outside a bakery looking sad. We are choosing an experience that was free before we arrived.
That is what The Free New York List is for. Every month I will keep a running calendar of museums, festivals, cultural events, parks and metro-area things that give us somewhere to go without creating a financial hangover on Monday.
