We’re Going Back to Narnia, and the Books Are Getting a Beautiful New Look

Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation is bringing C. S. Lewis’s beloved fantasy world back into the spotlight. But before we step into the cinema, HarperCollins has something rather tempting for our bookshelves.

There are certain fictional worlds that never really leave us. You might not have visited them in years, but mention a wardrobe, a lamppost in the snow, or a lion named Aslan, and suddenly you’re right back where you started.

Narnia is one of those places. And apparently, we’re all about to return.

With Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew arriving in theaters in February 2027, HarperCollins and Netflix have announced a new publishing collection celebrating C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. We’re talking new covers, beautiful hardcovers, retailer-exclusive collector’s editions, complete matching sets, and even a graphic novel.

As someone who appreciates a beautifully designed book almost as much as the story inside it, I have questions. Mostly about how much bookshelf space I can reasonably justify.

First, Let’s Talk About These New Editions

The publishing program begins arriving in November 2026, giving readers a chance to revisit the original stories before the film premieres.

The collection includes new movie-inspired paperback editions, matching hardcovers, complete seven-book sets, and deluxe versions of The Magician’s Nephew. And these aren’t simply old books with a movie poster slapped onto the front.

Artist Vance Kovacs has created new cover artwork inspired by the upcoming adaptation, giving the series a cohesive visual identity while maintaining its fantasy roots. For collectors, that distinction matters. There’s something special about an edition that feels thoughtfully designed, something you want to display, revisit, and eventually pass along.

The Collector’s Editions Are Especially Tempting

The deluxe Magician’s Nephew hardcovers include decorative features such as foil detailing, illustrated endpapers, and printed edges. There are also exclusive editions available through select retailers, including Barnes & Noble and Target, with different design treatments.

Which means, naturally, we’ll have to compare them. Because if there’s one thing the publishing industry understands about readers, it’s that telling us we already own the story has absolutely no effect on whether we want another beautiful edition.

A Graphic Novel Is Coming, Too

One of the most interesting announcements is a new full-color graphic novel adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, illustrated and adapted by Ben Hatke. Scheduled for January 12, 2027 in the United States, it offers another way to experience the story of Digory, Polly, magical rings, and the creation of Narnia.

I particularly love the idea of seeing the birth of Narnia interpreted through illustration. Fantasy has always invited readers to imagine impossible places. A graphic novel gives another artist the opportunity to show us how those places might look. And for younger readers discovering Narnia for the first time, that could be a lovely introduction.

Why Greta Gerwig Is Starting With The Magician’s Nephew

For many people, Narnia begins with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But Gerwig’s adaptation takes us further back, to the creation of Narnia itself.

The Magician’s Nephew was originally published in 1955, after The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but it comes first in the story’s internal chronology. It’s an interesting choice. Rather than introducing us to a world that already exists, Gerwig gets to show us how it came to be.

And considering her work on Little Women, I’m especially curious to see how she approaches a story so closely tied to childhood imagination, wonder, and the relationship between the ordinary world and the extraordinary.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on February 12, 2027, and its Netflix debut on April 2, 2027.

Are We Entering Another Golden Age of Fantasy Adaptations?

Between the continued popularity of romantasy, elaborate special editions, collector-focused publishing, and the growing number of book-to-screen adaptations, it’s an interesting time to be a reader.

What I find particularly exciting about Narnia’s return is that the books aren’t being treated as an afterthought to the film. They’re part of the celebration. The new editions invite longtime readers to revisit the series while giving an entirely new generation something beautiful to discover.

And perhaps that’s what makes this announcement so appealing. Long before we debate casting, costumes, or whether the adaptation lives up to our imaginations, we have the opportunity to return to the original stories. To open a book and remember why we loved the world in the first place. And yes, perhaps make a little room on the bookshelf.

Now tell me: Are you interested in the deluxe collector’s editions, the matching seven-book set, or the new graphic novel? Because I already know I’m going to be comparing those covers.

With love and a slightly unreasonable TBR,
Aura
