When the Moon Hatched

4 stars · A difficult beginning, a gorgeous world, dragons and a slow burn that eventually turned confusion into obsession.

I am not going to pretend I floated effortlessly into When the Moon Hatched. The lore is detailed, there is a glossary for a reason, and at first I felt like I had been dropped into the middle of a mythology lecture without my notes.

Then it clicked. Once I found the rhythm, the dragons, tension, banter, slow burn and atmospheric writing completely took over. Sarah A. Parker writes in a lyrical, cinematic way that asks more attention from the reader, but when it works, it really works.

Four stars from me — with the important footnote that I went from ‘what is happening?’ to very much needing the next book.
