Queen of Shadows felt like collecting receipts from several books and finally watching Sarah J. Maas start cashing them.

Characters and storylines collide, old wounds matter, plans inside plans start unfolding, and the woman at the center of it all is no longer trying to become who she is. She knows.

This is the kind of installment I love in a long fantasy series because earlier details stop feeling like setup and start becoming payoff. The emotional history from The Assassin’s Blade matters. The growth from Heir of Fire matters. The relationships have changed because the characters have changed.

Five stars. I finished this ready to run directly into the next disaster.
