Dire Bound

5 stars · Deadly bonding trials, direwolves, political intrigue and a slow burn that had me reaching for book two immediately.

Meryn enters a brutal world of bonding trials, direwolves and politics, and the deeper I got into it, the less interested I was in doing anything except finding out what happened next. The world feels dangerous without becoming impossible to follow, and the tension around Stark Therion gives the story exactly the kind of slow-burn pull I want from fantasy romance.

What really worked for me was the balance. There is enough political intrigue and betrayal to keep the fantasy plot moving, but the relationships never feel like an afterthought. Meryn has to survive, learn and make decisions in a system that is bigger than she is, and watching that unfold made the stakes feel personal instead of decorative.

I finished this just as the sequel was available, which is probably the best possible timing because waiting was not an option. Five stars — and straight into Fury Bound.
